  • SOME PENSIONERS INFORM US ABOUT THE FOLLOWING:

If at the time you took your pension, you choose the option to have your spouse to get the pension at the time of your death, it is possible that certain conditions will now apply. From the annual letter send by Morneau Sobeco to pensioners in this situation, please notice the following modification:

Letter of 2006

Letter of 2009

If your spouse dies before you

Upon retirement, your pension was reduced to take into account the value of the benefits provided to your spouse upon your death. In the event that your spouse predeceases you, all your future payments would be reinstated (increased) to the pension amount as if the survivor pension option had been waived at retirement.

Should your spouse predecease you

At retirement, your pension benefit has been reduced to take into account the value of benefits payable to your spouse upon your death. Should your spouse predecease you and if you meet certain conditions, your future pension benefit may be reinstated (increased) as if you had waived the survivor option at retirement.

If you did not get any explanations of the conditions, we suggest that you contact sp;sp;sp;YPG (Pension Plan) au 1 800 417-2114.

  • COMMENTS FROM TOM KUCHLEIN.

I just finished reading the Q/A regarding the pension fund. I was rather surprised to learn that no active pensioners are on the oversight committee for the fund. In light of some of the mismanagement that has gone on in the past with other pension fund, not to say that this would happen to ours, I feel that it would be the right thing to do, after all it is our fund not theirs. To have only YPG employees, whose loyalties are to the company is, I feel, dangerous.

  • CLARIFICATION FROM WAYNE COX:

Just a clarification on comments Jacques Bisaillon took from the Toronto Star re: refugee payments. They get a ONE time payment of $1890 towards settlement. A lot of people have been led to believe it is monthly but it is not. After that payment they depend on welfare. I am no fan of our refugee system but I wanted to set the record straight.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU LOSE YOUR WALLET

The following lawyer’s advices are FREE!

We all heard of horrors of people who did lost their wallet and me as a lawyer, became an expert since I was robbed. In one week, the thief purchase a superb cellular phone, got a VISA card, he did get a credit in order to purchase a computer and finally did get a PIN number allowing him to modify my personal driving license file and more.

  1. We are told to cancel all our credit cards as soon as we notice the disappearance of it. However, he must have with us all the no charge telephone number which relate to each individual credit card. This should be easily available.

  2. Have a police report of where the robbery did happen. This will prove your interest of taking of your personal belonging in front of the credit business and this may become the first step of a potential investigation. Now, the following is probably the most important:

  3. Call your national credit business in order to place a credit fraud alert regarding your name and our social insurance number. I never heard the following till the time that a bank employee told me that a credit request was made on internet on my behalf. If you do so, than every company who will verify your credit, will know that your cards was stolen and they will call you in order to get your approval for new credit.

When they told me to follow this procedure, almost 2 weeks after the robbery, unfortunately it was to late.

When you place an alert, you will discover that a file contain all credit request made under your name. Since the alert, I did not have any other problem and the thief got rid of the wallet because one person did give it to me. The alert did really stop the thief.

In Canada, call:
1-800-465-7166........to indicate a fraud alert to Equifax
1-800-808-6352........to indicate your social insurance card been stolen
In USA, call:
1-888-397-3742.......to indicate a fraud alert to Experian
1-800-680-7289.......to indicate a fraud alert to Trans-Union
1-800-269-0271.......to indicate your social insurance card been stolen.
Almost everything goes through Internet. Send this message to every person you know. After all, no one is immune against robbery.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR CANADIAN TRAVELLERS

DO I NOW NEED A PASSPORT TO TRAVEL TO THE UNITED STATES? (Information located on the official Passport Canada Web site: http://www.pptc.gc.ca/travel_tips/trip_planning_e.asp)

Though passports are the document of choice for travel, Canadian citizens do not currently require a passport to travel to the United States. However, Passport Canada encourages Canadians who are considering travelling outside Canada to obtain a passport, as it is the most widely accepted proof of Canadian identity and citizenship.

On April 5th, the United States Government announced the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requiring all visitors to and from the Americas, including Canadian citizens, to present a passport to enter the United States by December 31st, 2007.

The WHTI will be implemented in three phases as follows:

December 31st, 2005 - All citizens (including Canadians and Americans) transiting in the United States en route to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central or South America will require passports

December 31st, 2006 - All citizens (including Canadians and Americans) traveling by air or sea to, from or through the United States will require passports

December 31st, 2007 - All citizens (including Canadians and Americans) traveling by air, sea or land to, from or through the United States will require passports

For further information on United States policy, check directly with the US State Department at www.state.gov

  • Jacques Bisaillon provides us with an article that makes the pensioners thinking.

 Subject: Canadian Pensioners

From the hard copy of the Toronto Star, 18 April 2004.

I found it interesting that the federal government provides a single refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890.00 and each can also get an additional $580.00 in social assistance for a total of $2,470.00.

This compares very well to a single pensioner who after contributing to the growth and development of Canada for 40 to 50 years can only receive a monthly maximum of $1,012.00 in old age pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement. Maybe our pensioners should apply as refugees!

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU LOSE YOUR WALLET

The following lawyer’s advices are FREE!

  1. The next time that you get new cheques form your bank, do not have your full given name printed on it, but only your initial. If someone else use your cheques, they will not know if you sign with your initial or with your full name, only the bank will know.

  2. When you make a cheque in order to pay a credit card, do not write the full credit card number on the cheque. Write only the last 4 numbers. The credit card company does not require the previous numbers of your credit card.

  3. On your cheque, do not have your residential telephone number printed. If you want a telephone number printed, use your business telephone number.

  4. If you have a P.O. Box number, have this one printed on your cheque instead of your residential address.

  5. Never get your social insurance number printed on your cheques.

  6. Photocopy all documents that you keep in your wallet in 2 copies (both side) such as credit card, driver license, etc. and store it in a secure place. In case of rubbery, you will know exactly what your wallet will have and also you will have on hand all your credit card numbers as well as all the telephone numbers require to cancel any lost or stolen credit cards.

  7. Do the same thing with your passport and also keep a copy on when you are traveling.
